Installation Instructions

Configuring Windows 95/98 TCP/IP and Dial-Up Settings

This tutorial explains how to use Windows 95/98 dial-up networking with the Oklahoma City Community College Communications Server

Step 1: Installing the Dial-Up Networking Software.
Step 2: Installing and Configuring the TCP/IP protocol.
Step 3: Setting up DNS and TCP/IP Control Panel Options.
Step 4: Creating the NWinfo.Net Dial-Up Icon and Connecting to the Internet.


Step 1

To install Dial-Up Networking:

  1. Before starting, place your Windows 95/98 CD into your CD-ROM drive, or have your disks handy.
  2. Click on START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL.

  3. Double click on the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS control panel.
  4. Click on the WINDOWS SETUP tab at the top of the window.

  5. Click on the COMMUNICATIONS, then press the DETAILS button.
  6. Check the checkbox that says DIAL-UP NETWORKING if it is NOT already checked.
  7. Click OK on all the menus until you return to the Control Panel.
  8. Windows 95/98 will then install Dial-Up Networking if it is not already installed.

Step 2

To add TCP/IP:

  1. Have your Windows 95/98 CD available.
  2. Click on START, then highlight SETTINGS, then click on CONTROL PANEL.
  3. Double click on theNETWORKING control panel.

  4. Scroll through the list-box labeled "The following Network Components are installed:" and look for a item labeled TCP/IP or TCP/IP DIAL-UP ADAPTER. If you find this item, skip ahead to Step 3. Otherwise, continue with the setup.
  5. Click on the ADD button, then select PROTOCOL, and press the ADD button.

  6. Select MICROSOFT as the manufacturer, then TCP/IP as the protocol.
  7. Click on OK buttons all of menus back to the Control Panel window.
  8. Windows 95/98 will then add TCP/IP.

Step 3

To setup Network DNS and Options:

  1. Click on START, then highlight SETTINGS, then click on CONTROL PANEL.
  2. Double click on the NETWORK icon.
  3. Select TCP/IP from the list of installed components, then click the PROPERTIES button.

  4. Click on the DNS CONFIGURATION tab at the top of the window.
  5. Click on the ENABLE DNS option.
  6. In the text box labeled "Host:" type yourfirstname. Make sure you used lowercase letters.
  7. In the text box labeled "Domain:" type okc.cc.ok.us. Again, use lowercase letters only.
  8. In the text box with three periods, click on the left side of the first period. A flashing cursor should appear.
  9. Type the following number, 164.58.64.2. Click ADD.
  10. Click on the GATEWAY tab at the top of the window.
  11. Type the following number, 164.58.64.1. Click ADD.
  12. Click on the WINS CONFIGURATION tab at the top of the window.
  13. Click on the DISABLE WINS RESOLUTION option.
  14. Click OK at the bottom of the window.
  15. Again, click OK at the bottom of the Network window. Congratulations, you have setup your Domain Name System (DNS)!

Step 4

To setup your OKCCC Dial-Up access icon:

  1. Double click on your MY COMPUTER icon in the top right corner of your screen.
  2. Double click on the DIAL-UP NETWORKING icon.
  3. If the "Make a New Connection" window did not automatically display, double click ont the MAKE A NEW CONNECTION icon.
  4. MY CONNECTION is highlighted within the text box. Replace this by typing OKCCC. Click NEXT.
  5. Enter the area code [405] and phone number [682-3150]. Click NEXT after entering the phone number. [ To disable CALL WAITING type *70, before the phone number. (Example: *70,682-3150)]
  6. Verify the information within the newly displayed window.
  7. An icon with a little yellow phone connected to two computers (labeled OKCCC) should appear next to the Make New Connection icon.
  8. Using your RIGHT mouse button click once on the OKCCC icon. This will bring up a small submenu.

  9. Click on the CREATE SHORTCUT (with your left mouse button). This will create a shortcut on your desktop.
  10. Again, right click on your OKCCC icon. Click on PROPERTIES.
  11. Click on the SERVER TYPES tab (or button).

  12. Within the box labeled "Advanced Options" make sure that ONLY ENABLE SOFTWARE COMPRESSION has a checkmark next to it.
  13. Within the box labeled "Allowed Network Protocols" make sure that ONLY TCP/IP has a checkmark next to it.
  14. Click OK at the bottom window.
  15. Click on the CONNECTIONS menu at the top of the window.
  16. Click on SETTINGS.
  17. Click on the box next to REDIAL (checkmarked). Type 100 times for retires. Click OK.

Using Your OKCCC Account

To Log in:

  1. Double click on your OKCCC icon on your desktop.

  2. Type in your username using all lowercase letters.
  3. Type in your password. If your password starts with a letter, the first letter must be capitalized, while all remaining letter must be lowercase.
  4. Click on CONNECT.
  5. You will hear the modem communicate with our system (if you speaker is turned on). Once connected, you can start other applications, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
